“There can be no progress, no achievement without sacrifice.”
Progress requires giving up competing habits or comforts so that effort can stay directed toward the chosen end.
As a Man Thinketh, chapter “The Thought-Factor in Achievement.”
“The worth of work with the hands”
Washington opens the book by treating manual work as capable of contributing to education, dignity and practical development rather than merely supplying labor.
Working With the Hands, Chapter I, opening sentence; Project Gutenberg #64504. This deliberately short excerpt is presented with its educational context.
“I resolved however to work hard, and thus grow cool, and quick, and forceful.”
The narrator responds to anticipated responsibility by practicing deliberately, treating capability and composure as qualities that can be strengthened through effort.
Phantastes; Project Gutenberg #325. The sentence is spoken by the fictional first-person narrator while preparing for danger and should remain tied to that fantasy context.
“My race will succeed in proportion as it learns to do a common thing in an uncommon manner.”
Distinctive success can come from doing ordinary work unusually well, emphasizing thoroughness and indispensable usefulness rather than status.
Up from Slavery, Chapter XVI, “Europe,” Project Gutenberg #2376. While discussing Henry O. Tanner and recognition for excellent work, Washington restates his Tuskegee principle that advancement depends on doing useful work so thoroughly that its value becomes difficult to ignore.
“you are going to put into this year the hardest and the most earnest work that you have ever done in your life”
Washington turns a broad desire for growth into a concrete commitment to more earnest effort over the coming year.
Character Building, “Growth,” Project Gutenberg #60484. The line is part of an exhortation to Tuskegee students at the beginning of a new period of study.
“The master-word is Work”
Osler makes sustained work the organizing principle of his address to medical students, emphasizing disciplined practice over brilliance without application.
The Master-Word in Medicine, address delivered October 1, 1903 at the opening of the new buildings of the University of Toronto Medical Faculty; reviewed against the represented 1903 John Murphy pamphlet, Internet Archive identifier b28060805. ‘The master-word is Work’ is Osler’s organizing refrain and is followed by his appeal to write the word on the heart and forehead. This remains historical professional rhetoric rather than an endorsement of unsafe working hours or workaholism.
“Self-help is the best help.”
Asking for help does not replace the responsibility to make the effort that is already within one’s own power.
Moral printed after “Hercules and the Wagoner” in the Townsend translation; Hercules first tells the driver to help himself.
