“To affect the quality of the day, that is the highest of arts.”
Daily life becomes something that can be shaped deliberately through attention, choices, and routine.
Walden, “Where I Lived, and What I Lived For.”
“Never leave that till tomorrow, which you can do to-day.”
The maxim turns prompt action into a habit: work that can reasonably be completed now should not be needlessly transferred to an uncertain tomorrow.
The Way to Wealth; a Poor Richard maxim on delay and useful employment of time.
“Employ thy time well, if thou meanest to gain leisure.”
Leisure is easier to protect when working time is used deliberately, linking time management with freedom rather than treating organization as an end in itself.
Poor Richard’s Almanack; the maxim connects disciplined use of working time with the ability to gain leisure.
“Clean thoughts make clean habits.”
The line treats habits as downstream from repeated attention and intention, not as isolated acts.
As a Man Thinketh, in the discussion of thought, health, and habit.
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
Guarding inner life is presented as practical because attention and motives influence conduct downstream.
Proverbs 4:23 in the King James Version.
“When you work you are a flute through whose heart the whispering of the hours turns to music.”
Work is imagined as a way of giving form to passing time, connecting effort with participation and expression.
The Prophet, “On Work.”
“The ambition to live strictly according to the highest common sense during the next twenty-four hours is an ambition that needs a lot of beating.”
Bennett deliberately reduces improvement to the next day: consistently applying sound judgment for twenty-four hours is already a demanding practical aim.
The Human Machine, concluding emphasis on present practice over distant aspiration. The idiom “needs a lot of beating” means the ambition is difficult to surpass, not that it requires violence.
